The ACN Process
At the Academy of Coaching and NLP, we’ve streamlined the process of becoming a credentialed coach. What’s more, we provide all the support you need to begin and build your business as a successful coach. Let’s take a look at how this comprehensive and supportive process works by tracing the path of two of our students at ACN, Serena and Derek.
STEP ONE: Training
Serena wanted to keep her current job while training as a coach, so she enrolled in ACN’s weekend program. This choice gave Serena the flexibility she needed as well as the security of maintaining her salary. She commuted to the training site in the San Francisco Bay Area. There, she received the 125 hours of training and completed her coursework over a period of six months.
Derek was in career transition and eager to get started on his new path as a coach. He scheduled a summer vacation and took ACN’s intensive program over 21 days. He completed the 125 hours of training during this period and also spent some time enjoying himself as a tourist in the San Francisco Bay Area where he connected and networked with new coaches from all over the world.
Both Serena and Derek worked with ACN’s top faculty. Their courses were held in a comfortable, small setting where each student received the individual attention they needed to fully understand the course materials. The coursework provided them a thorough understanding of the core coaching competencies, methodologies, and hands-on practice, preparing them to take the ICF oral and written exams.

STEP TWO: Credentialing
After completing their 125-hour coach program and becoming a certified NLP Coach, Serena and Derek both received their NLP Coach certificate. Derek felt confident and proceeded to move ahead. He began enrolling clients in his new coaching business. Serena decided she wanted to follow the ICF credentialing route and receive further support in integrating her coaching skill set, building self confidence and a client base. She began to log the client hours she needed to qualify for the first level of ICF credentialing, the ACC level. For the ACC credential, the coach needs to meet with at least eight clients and log 100 hours of client coaching.
Serena enrolled her first clients as a result of ACN’s Affordable Coaching service, a referral network that links clients who are seeking coaching at the affordable rate of $35 per hour. Because Derek and Serena were ACN students, they were uniquely eligible to benefit from this service. Serena also received the supervision she needed to fulfill the ICF requirements through the specially trained supervisors and Mentor Coaches at ACN.

STEP THREE: Building Your Coaching Practice
Serena and Derek now felt they needed some information and support to build their businesses.
Inspired by ACN’s successful faculty, who were earning six figure salaries, Serena and Derek each began the process of writing a business plan. Because Derek already had a background in business, he took a series of ACN’s telecourses that gave him the specific information and tools to write a plan envisioning his goals and planning the steps to get there. Serena, who did not have a background in business and wanted more guidance, decided to work one-on-one with a business coach who provided her with the specific tools she needed to write her business plan.
Derek and Serena realized that building a coaching practice, like building any business, required ongoing marketing. Derek and Serena took the coach marketing workshops offered through ACN. Each student developed a marketing plan for their unique styles and talents; defined their target audiences; and developed the outreach tools to deliver their message in order to enroll clients and build a steady flow of income.
